Perspectives from the National Census -2000 <br />• The number of children less than 5 has increased (4%) since 1990, but as a percent of the <br />total population it has decreased. <br />• There is an increasing number of teen and preteens -the echo boomers. <br />• The number of young adults, age 20 to 34, has declined since 1990. <br />• The population between 20 and 34 decreased by 3.4 million to 58.8 million by 2000. <br />• The number of unmarried couples living together increased 72% to 5.5 million households <br />during the 1990. <br />• The number of married households is 54.5 million, and still is the traditional life style. <br />• Baby Boomers have increased their comp and vacation time and wealth. Over 82.8 million <br />people are between the ages of 35 to 54, up 32 percent or 20 million from 1990. The <br />Boomers like to redefine the eras based on their perspective. <br />• The population between 55 and 59 increased by 28% to 13.5 million or 5% of the total <br />national population. <br />• Nationally, the population between 60 and 64 increased onl ° <br />y 2 /o to 10.8 million since 1990. <br />• The number of people over 75 have increased by over 3.5 million since 1990. <br />• The population over age 75 increased by 26% to16.6 million since 1990. <br />• The population over age 85 increased by 38% during the 1990's. <br />Sources: US Census; Wall Street Journal 5/28/01 <br />
