Works/Partners Effectively with Community Organizations to Address Human
Rights Issues -Thelma McKenzie and Larry Voeller
• Outreach
• Leverage Community Organizations and Institutions
• Relationship with Support Groups/Organizations
• Strengthen our Ties with Schools
• Visibility in the Community
From Larry
1. Create a mission statement for the Roseville Human Rights Commission that
specifically addresses (a) What we do; (b) Who we do it for; and (c) What happens when
we do it well by October 1, 2002. (In the process, clarify our specific role regarding
human rights complaints.)
2. Create a stakeholder dialogue guide and hold stakeholder dialogue sessions with a
minimum of 6 stakeholders including 2 schools, 2 communities of faith and 2 businesses
by June, 2003. (The purpose is to understand the human rights issues they face and the
ways the HRC might partner with them to support their needs.)
3. Develop and submit a formal proposal for grant monies to support a human rights
educational program we can offer to local schools by September 20, 2002.
4. Devote one monthly meeting to an in-service for HRC members on a specific topic
related to the mission statement we create in #1 and our own assessment of our collective
development needs by June, 2003.
From Thelma
Action to be taken:
l . Set-Up a "Partnership Workshop" as one of our meetings or do it in the
day with whichever HRC Members can attend. The contents of the workshop would be
for our commission to listen to them re: their needs and ideas of working in community;
find common grounds to work together with then and also to present to these community
people how we want to partner with them and what we are asking of them, how do we
want them involved.
Our work will be refining and developing this workshop to meet the goals we are setting
as we will need partners to help us with programs and also finances in some instances i.e.
underwrite the essay contest awards both for students and teachers.........
(a) Commission's first contact via letter [we can draft the letter and send
to members for input and refinement then send]
(b) Who will we contact: examples
1. New HRA Agency in Roseville;
2. Parks and Recreation; Police Commission;
3. Chamber of Commerce -Roseville;
4. League of Women Voters;
