However, we've added the specific dates associated with the timeline, given
some base assumptions regarding ordinance amendment, etc.. Here's the information:
Special Election Timeline
May 12 - Ordinance change
May 20 - Ordinance effective
June 9 - Council calls a Special Election
June 10 to 24 - Filing for office - open for two weeks
July 15* - Ballot printing completed
Before July 25** - Appoint election judges
July 18 to August 18 Absentee voting
August 19 - Special Election
September 9 - Primary Election
*Ramsey County says to allow three weeks for set up, County approval, attorney approvals
and printing of ballots. City must use county contracted printing company.
**It would take a minimum of 30 days to recruit, ,schedule and train judges. City must
appoint a minimum of 25 days before election, so need 55 days to schedule.
Additional note - If City has to change a voting location, the City must provide a 90 days
notice to the state. It will take at least two weeks to confirm whether all current voting
locations are available on August 19.
-----Original Message-----
From: dan.roe@comcast.net [mailto:dan.roe@comcast.net]
Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2008 11:53 AM
To: Bill Malinen
Cc: Chris Miller
Subject: special election timing from Monday's meeting
Bill,
I seem to recall that in 2004 there was a report on the timing of a special election that
included several milestones and the associated dates. I can't say that that type of
detail was not in our recent information from Carolyn, but if not, I think it would be
1
