Depending on the scape of the eletian, and how many work polling sites, it can also be expensive.
There would probably still need to be some temporary workers at election time, but it would likely be
far Iss that it would take to stafF poffing sites.
However,. the city clerk doesn't necessariiy see this as a. big mony saver. There is still the cost of
rn.ailing ballots to al! registered voters, and paying the return postage of thase who choose to
pa.rticipate.
Sti.fl, Oregan has apparertly found there can be some savings:
Even with limited savings, K.uiper sEes advantages, as I do.
--It would be more convenient far voters. Many -- approach'rg 70 percent -- who currently vote in city
elections alredy choose this optian. A majority of area residents -- by choosing the aptional mail-in
ballots -- are already telling ofFicials tat this is the. rn.ethod of oting they prefer.
Yes, i is trce some peopfe prefer actually going to the pafls.. Et gives them more of a sense. of
paricipation and civic pride: And some also d'istrust the mail-in ballot system, thinking it is more apen
o fraud.
But times change and, as oted earlier, tle number af oters wanting to mail their ballots grows in
each election cycle. The time is coming when it wan't make economic sense to maintain polling places
any I.onger, and certainly not in the number we currently do.
--Maif-only elections would also eliminate provisional ballots, the ones which have to be erified
because people coming to the polls don't have required identification or may have changed addresses
without natifying election officials.
Maif balfots are not allowed to be forwarded and are retumed to the election affie. Sa those wha fail
to give notificaion of thir move would have to correct their information in order to vote. Ballot rafls
would be cleared of peopfe who did not meet identi€ication requiremen.ts - or who had died or were
otherwise ineligible -- resulting in more accurate voting rolls.
