CHAPTER 409: RESIDENTIAL COMPOSTING <br />2 <br />3 SECTION: <br />4 <br />5 409.01: Definitions <br />6 409.02: A�plicability <br />7 409.03: Compost Containers <br />8 409.04: Location on Property <br />9 409.05: Compost Materials <br />10 409.06: Maintenance <br />11 409.07: Abatement <br />12 <br />13 <br />14 <br />15 <br />16 <br />17 <br />18 <br />409.01: DEFINITIONS <br />COMPOSTING: a microbial process that converts plant materials to a usable or�anic soil <br />amendment or mulch. <br />409.02: APPLICABILITY <br />Rules set forward in Chapter 409 are a�plicable onlv to parcels desi�nated R-1 Sin�le-Family <br />Residential under Chapter 1004. <br />409.03: COMPOST CONTAINERS <br />19 Compostin� shall be conducted within an enclosed container(s) not to exceed five feet in length, <br />20 width, or hei�ht. Lots of up to ten thousand (10,000) square feet in area mav have up to two <br />21 compost containers per lot and lots �reater than ten thousand (10,000) square feet in area maX <br />22 have up to three compost containers per lot. Compost containers shall be constructed or made of <br />23 a durable material; includin�, but not limited to, sturdv woven wire fencin�, rot-resistant wood, <br />24 or a commerciall�purchased compostin� unit that will provide for adequate aeration. Containers <br />25 shall be constructed and maintained in a structurallv sound manner. <br />26 409.04: LOCATION ON PROPERTY <br />27 <br />28 <br />29 <br />30 <br />Compost container(s) shall be located in the rear vard no closer than one foot to anv rear or side <br />propertv line and no closer than twentv (20) feet to anv habitable buildin�, other than the <br />resident's own home. <br />409.05: COMPOST MATERIALS <br />31 Material such as ra� ss cli�in�s, leaves, soft-bodied plant materials, straw, sawdust, fruit or <br />32 ve�etable scraps, flowers, lake plants, coffee �rounds, e��shells, and commerciallv available <br />33 compost in�redients mav be placed in compost container(s). Material such as meat, bones, fat, <br />34 oils, �rease, dair�products, brush �reater than one-fourth inch in diameter, human or pet waste, <br />35 plastics or svnthetic fibers shall not be placed in compost container(s). <br />36 <br />37 <br />38 <br />39 <br />409.06: MAINTENANCE <br />Compost materials shall be mana�ed to minimize odor �eneration and to promote effective <br />decomposition of the materials in a safe, secure and sanitarv manner. <br />
