This year, twelve schools from 7 Districts
participated and 6 winners were awarded prizes and certificates. Students from
Shoreview, Roseville, Minneapolis, Austin, Paynesville and Hopkins wrote the 2009
winning essays.
As you know, the annual Essay Contest is our vehicle to help students become aware
of documents and publications that are a framework for Human Rights in America:
The Minnesota Human Rights Act, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the
United States Bill of Rights and hate crime laws.
This Essay Contest also provides each local Human Rights Commission the
opportunity to refresh and strengthen connections with the school districts within their
communities. We are seeking a wider participation of local commissions, their school
districts and communities by working to increase awareness and knowledge among
the K-12 students of the important Human Rights documents. In this light, we are in
need of your assistance and are soliciting ideas from you.
1. What might be a topic for the 2010 Essay Contest?
2. What are strategies for helping schools use Human Rights information?
3. How can we increase Human Rights Commissions' participation in programs like
the Essay Contest?
Please send an email reply by August 15. We will compile the ideas we receive and
get back to you for further planning.
Under separate cover we will send you materials that you may use in initiating contact
with your school superintendent, principals and/or teachers. Essay contest information
(except 2010 details which are incomplete) may be downloaded from
~;-~°t~~leatueufttutlturn;~nri~>ht~.or~.
Respectfully yours,
League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions Education Committee
Sam Abdullai Sr., Chair, Ada Alden, Thelma McKenzie, Marion Helland
Please reply to:
tnarionellztndis~colncrtst.nct-763-546-7469
