<br />A higkz-coun� fiber optic backbone provides flexibility and scalability for future
<br />applications and networking technologies. In the past few years, the price of fiber optic
<br />cable has declined, creating a situation where the incremental cost of additional fiber
<br />strands is marginal in the overall cost of fiber optic construction. The proposed backbone
<br />design for this study � zs a 144 count fiber optic ring with path diversity into each of the
<br />hub sites. Figure 1 shows the proposed ring design, which encompasses approximately
<br />39 miles of fiber optic cable construction.

<br />From the backbone ring, fiber optic laterals are constructed �a provide connectivity to the
<br />remaining NSCC sites. Minimizing lateral length has two benefits: (1) it decreases the
<br />construction costs by decreasing the amount of fiber optic plant needed, and (2) it
<br />increases the reliability of the network by shortening the single point of failure for fiber
<br />optic cuts.
<br />Lateral fiber optic connections are small count fiber optic cables that provide connectivity
<br />back to hub sites and eenl�'a�. networking equipment. CTC recommends a minimum of
