The units are rated at 80°/o heating efficiency. Natural gas is
used to provide service hot water for resurFacing the ice and showers in the locker
rooms, and is required year round.
3ad Speed la#r+ vl
Ice on the speed skating oval is maintained from November through February. Energy
consumption is directly related to the months the ice surface is in use and the outdoor air
temperature. Irt warmer months such as November, when there are fewer heating degree days, the
kWh consumption is higher, and in December and February when the degree days are higher,
the kWh consumption is lower.
The following graphs show the energy consumption and energy cost for the Speed
Skating Oval over the year. During colder weather the refrigeration plant does not
operate as much since there is not as much load on the ice, while during a warmer
month the plant operation increases. The electrical demands are very high when the
refrigeration plant is in operation, while very te energy is used during the summer
months. Natural gas consumption is high when the oval is in operation because of the
use of hot water to resurface the ice and heating the maintenance garage attached to
the refrigeration room.
Gea-ere Systems Page 8 of 33
