Roseville Skating Center and City Hall
Feasibility Study September23,2007
Iniegrating ice storage in this manner reduces the peak electrical draw in the Banquet
Hall by approximately 25 to 50 kVV depending on the capacity of the thermal ice storage
tanks. In addition to the peak demand reduction, the amount of equipment that must be
installed and maintained is reduced.'
Bergerson Caswell [nc. is a drilling company specializing in the installation of vertical
GHX systems. This company has installed vertical GHX systems in the Minneapolis
area, and has indicated that a vertical GHX can be installed for approximately$11 to $12
per foot (including piping to and from the buildings, fluid, etc.)
An estimate of the size of the GHX large enough to accommodate the loads for the ice
Arena ! Banquet Hall facility is a vertical GHX with approximately 50 boreholes to a
depth of 200'. The total estimated cost of the GHX is $120,000.
The following chart summarizes the estimated costs for Options and 2 for the Ice
Arena / Banquet Hall
Figure 22: Shows a comparison between Option 1 and Option 2. There is an estimated cost
difference of approximately $421,000. Note that option 2 provides for the replacement of the
rooftop units as well as the addition of the GHX, and includes the cost of a thermal storage buffer
underthe floor.
Arena Dehumidification
The existing dehumidification equipment in the ice arena appears to be operating
effectively, and appears to be well maintained. When major repairs and maintenance is
required for this equipment, it will be possible to integrate the dehumidification, heating,
cooling and ventilation requirements of the ice arena into an integrated unit that makes
use of the refrigeration and waste heat recovery capability of an integrated system.
Maintenance Cost Comparison &. System Longevity
A conventional refrigeration system is considered industrial equipment. It is designed for
long-term, heavy usage. Most facilities develop a regularly scheduled maintenance
program to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the equipment. Several facility
operators in the United States and Canada have reported that they allow an annual
budget of $12,000 to $16,000 for maintenance such as rebuilding of compressor units,
replacement or repair of the cooling tower, testing and maintaining the secondary
refrigerant fluid, repair of a chiller barrel, etc.
Over twenty integrated geothermal ice rink systems have been installed in the U.S. and
Canada before the year 2000. Their experience has shown significantly lower annual
ice Kube Systems: "Integrated Geothermal lce Storage Systems"- Ed Lohrenz, June 2005
Geo-Xergy Systems Page 25 of 33
