We are now gathering other local ovenent- and PEG programming-related
organizations to join a Minnesota coalition to work together at the legislature. The
Alliance for Community Media (ACM) and its Midwest Region is our third primary
coalitionmember. Others such as the MinnesotaMetropolitanUtilitiesAssociation, the
Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities, the Minnesota Conference of Mayors and the
Minnesota Association of Counties will be invited. This coalition is modeled aier the
very successful national coalition that has worked on the US Congress and FCC fronts on
our behalf. That group is now preparing to respond with appropriate legal action on
behalf of its members when the December 20,2006, FCC Order is finally released to the
public.
A cities' "suinrnit" meeting hosted jointly by MACTA and the LMC was scheduled for
February 6,2007, to inform and engage members on two issues: 1) Actively preparing for
the possible introduction of anti-local franchising legislation ane/or anti-city broadband
ownership legislation by the industry this Session, and 2) Understanding the impact of the
December 20,2006, FCC Order and communicatingwith U.S. Representativesand
Senators to enlist their aid in Congress and in oversight of the FCC. A follow-up seminar,
possiblyby conference call, will be scheduled as soon as the FCC Order is released.
MACTA ineinbers should be contacting your state legislators to share with them the 2007
Legislative Principles and to ask them NOT to support industry legislation to eliminate or
reduce local franchising control or local ability to initiate broadband projects in a
community. Legislators on the 7VIN Senate or House teleeomm committees (listed below)
are especially important. Please review the list and contact your legislators immediately.
Handout materials and sample letters are available via e-mail from the MACTA office at
651-635-0306.
