It's clear to me that without immigration, most of us would not be here right now
because our ancestors immigrated to America. Without immigration, the US would not
benefit from our unique diversity and rich cultural traditions and values. We get to enjoy a
variety of food, music, and artistic offerings: salsa, spaghetti, fortune coolies, lefse, jazz, and
soccer were all either introduced or influenced by other cultures. I absolutely love the
Swedish meatballs, turkey, ashed potatoes, red cabbage, lefsa, green beans, cranberries, and
stuffing from my grandmother's cultural backgrounds that our family gets to enj oy every
Thanksgiving and Christmas. And, I enjoy learning about my heritage as my grandmother
prepares these special meals and tells her stories. I'm thankful for the opportunities I have to
learn about and be exposed to different cultural traditions of the many wonderful and
interestingfriends who immigrated to the U.S. Maybe someday I will fuX"zIi my childhood
wish to travel around the world where I can apply my knowledge and understandings as I
experience each country I stop in.
I think I'm only beginning to understand why immigration i s such a controversial
issue today and how complicated it is for immigrants. As I try to "decode" this complicated
topic, I have concluded that some eaple are afraid of the cultural differences and are afraid
that wi.Z be a problem concerning their safety. Others are concerned that immigrants may
start to over populate the nationals and begin to overrule the L . Some people worry that
scarce resources will become even more limited due to the greatly increasing population. It
seems that most of the current controversies are related to controlling undocumented
zzgran#s. I'm confused as to why our government thinks that they can keep Mexican
immigrants out of the U.S. by constructing a large wali to block ilegal immigrants from
crossing the border, when the wall only covers ht'the possible entrances. I feel, that by
setting up a fence or wall on the border between Mexico and the U.S., the nations are stunting
