� <br />Mistreatment of immigrants has been evident in the United States for <br />centuries. The Jewish immigrants, who escaped from Europe due to harassment, <br />were persecuted in America because of their religious practices and beliefs. The <br />Irish, who arrived in the 1800's were looked on as a drain to society because <br />they took jobs away from Americans. In 1882, Congress passed the Chinese <br />Exclusion Act, which prevented Chinese from entering America and becoming <br />citizens for 10 years. Many immigrants who arrived in Ellis Island or Angel Island <br />found the lengthy medical exams offensive and shameful. In today's world, many <br />immigrants are taken advantage of by con-people who trick them into schemes <br />that steal their money and lure them into poverty. <br />Immigration has also hurt our country, especially Illegal immigration. <br />Illegal immigrants crowd American hospitals, receiving medical care they cannot <br />afford. Many criminal illegal immigrants flee to America to escape the law in their <br />home country, and some even commit crimes in the U.S. Too many immigrants <br />can lead to disagreements or even fights between ethnicities. Unskilled and <br />uneducated immigrants live in poverty and the require public assistance. <br />Immigrants also sometimes have little understanding of American culture and <br />daily life — like driving, shopping, money management, and filling out paperwork, <br />which can make communication difficult. Many immigrants can't speak English, <br />therefore more money has to be spent in schools to teach the language, which <br />can become a challenge for school districts with many immigrants. <br />Immigration can help or harm our country.
