Gasaway
Re: Mold at Fire Station 1
In the fa11 of 2006 firefighters began complaining of eye and throat irritations while at Fire
Station 1. Their symptoms were consistentwith complaints in 2001 when testing was completed
and Station 1 was found to have mold in the basement. In the interest of firefighter health and
wellness, ATC Associates was hired in November 2006 to conduct another mold test (Limited
Initial Microbial Evaluation). The test results indicated reservoirs of k'enicillium/Aspergillus and
Basidiosporestypes of mold existed near in or near the FirefightersDayz-oom. area. The report
further indicated the presence of:
1. Water damaged and suspect mold impacted wood rafters, decking, and bridging.
2. Water damaged sheetrock attached to the wood decking.
3. Suspect mold on fiberglass insulation on ductvvark and between the sheetrock and wood
rafiers.
4. Suspect mold on the HVAC diffuser in the Maintenance Room.
5. Sewer gas odors from the basement and the wall inspection penetration in the
maintenance room.
6. Water damaged suspected ceiling tile located above the West Stairway to the Basement
and in the Firefighters Day Room area. The walls in these two areas indicate some water
damage.
Fire Station 1(2701 Lengton Avenue) was build around 1930 and is the oldest of Roseville's
three fire stations. Station 2(2501 Fairview Avenue) was built in 1967 and Station 3(2335 Da1e
Street) was built in 1975.
Fire Station 1 was first used as an automobile dealership. In 1945 it became Roseville's first fire
station. The building has endured many users over the years, including offices for city
administration, public works, parks & recreation, police department, license center, information
technology, fire administration, and the Roseville Historical Society.
Currently, Fire Station 1 is occupied by the Roseville Fire Department, Roseville Parks &
Recreation (both meeting rooms and storage), and the Roseville Historical Society. The needs of
the non-fire department occupants is a factor when considering the fate of this building.
In 2001, standingwater and mold were discovered in the basement, damaging fire department
equipment and city records stored in the basement. The remediation prompted the removal the
