Occasionally the changes are quite
extensive and impact a large number of business customers such as the change to American Boulevard in
Bloomington. Obviously the change the City of Roseville is proposing will be quite large and will
impact a number of business customers.
Most street name changes have very little impact on mail processing. This change, proposed by the City
of Roseville, should actually be an improvemenL In recent years the Postal Service and many major
mailers have invested in sophisticated equipment such as optical character readers and barcode sorters
designed to code and sort mail more efficiently through automation. Over the years the Postal Service
has seen a high number of automation processing problems with the Roseville County Road addresses.
Issues such as multiple street name abbreviations, the combination of alpha characters and numbers such
as B2 and C2, missing or incorrect directionals, and others have often forced the Postal Service to sort the
mail manually at a much higher cost. Thus this change can be an improvement.
Generally the new street names will not be an issue, but I can malce a few brief suggestions. The names
should not be excessively long or contain numerous words. Directionals and sufxes are ne, but
should not be part of the street name such as "123 South Lane" or "123 Roseville Avenue Road".
Obviously you should also avoid using special characters such as fractions or hyphens.
Again, with sufcient lead time and proper customer notification this change should be very smooth.
The Postal Service can enter the new street name as a"change alias" which allows us to sort to both the
new and old street name. The change alias will also help notify mailer software that a street name change
has talcen place.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me, Don Wandzel, Manager, Address
Management Systems, at 612-349-4476.
Sincerely,
--
Donald k;mtl
Manager, Address Management Systems
