Honeybees feed from plants (flowers). Other bees include <br />the bumblebee and other native bees which are present in smaller nests and feed from flowers. Wasps feed oa� <br />other insects and flowers. In late summer the food supply for wasps diminishes and they will seek hur�na�1 food. <br />Illustrations of bees <br />Description of Honeybees <br />Domesticated and have kept for at least 3000 years. Honeybees were bought to the New World shortly after <br />settlements began because they are so important as pollinators. One third of our diet is dependent on pollination <br />with honeybees. Minnesota is within the top 5 beekeeping states. Arguably the honeybee is the most studied <br />insect. The University of Minnesota has a widely known research center of honeybees. The Minnesota hygienic <br />honeybee was developed on the University St. Paul campus. State fair has exhibits live bees with <br />demonstrations as well as competitions. Beekeeping in Roseville is a hobby activity, usually less than 5 <br />colonies. State law requires the use of a hive with removable parts for inspection and maintenance. <br />Illustration of hive <br />Honeybees are almost nonexistent in the wild cannot live for long unattended. The behavior of honeybees has <br />been modified with breeding but unlike other animals a colonies behavior can be changed with replacement of <br />the queen. <br />Beekeeping in Roseville <br />In Roseville beekeeping is a hobby. Roseville has i�o commercial beekeeping left. Beekeeping as a hobby <br />activity is in agreement with several sections of the city's comprehensive plan. Specifically ti�e protection and <br />enhancement of ecological systems and quality of life associated with hobbies. Beekeeping and beekeepers can <br />be useful to develop environmental awareness for citizens and policy makers. Currently the Harriet Alexander <br />Nature center uses honeybees in its youth programs. Hobbies are important factors in quality of life. <br />Beekeeping as a hobby most closely resembles gardening and can directly benefit other non-beekeepers, <br />especially gardeners and fruit growers. <br />Current Roseville Beekeeping and Regulation <br />It is estimated that are 8-10 locations in Roseville with honeybees. Honeybees can travel up l0 3 miles and <br />surrounding communities allow beekeeping. Honeybees from other areas visit Roseville. Bees are not <br />specifically mention in the city code. Honeybees do not classify as wild animals in the city code or in the farm <br />animal division.
