Department Approval: �. � � REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Manager Approved: ---�� Date: 5/22/2006 Item No: 3.f Agenda Section: Consent Item Description: Authorize Staff to Submit an Application for a Technology Award Background Over the past several years, City Staff have been diligent in pursuing partnerships with surrounding communities to share information technology and support needs. As a result of those efforts, the City provides information technology a�d/ar telephone support services to 17 different communities or agencies. Regional cooperative efforts such as this are oftentimes well suited for awards or grant programs. Recently, Staff identified an award program sponsored by Cisco Systems Inc., a major supplier of network infrastructure, phone equipment, and other products. Cisco is the primary backbone component of the City's information and communication systems, as well as most other agencies that we've partnered with. Discussion Points The 'Cisco Growing with Technology Award' recognizes those organizations that have implemented Cisco-based solutions which resulted in growth, extended services, and greater efficiencies and effectiveness. Recipients of the Award receive formal recognition by Cisco, which may include future public relations or marketing opportunities, along with vouchers for Cisco products up to a maximum of $2S,OQ0. In the event the City receives the award, the voucher will be used to purchase equipment that will allow for new partnerships with area communities. City Staff has reviewed the application process and has determined that the amount of staff time needed to submit the application will be minimal. Applications must be received by Cisco by June 25,2006.
