Kellogg Blvd.
Saint Paul, MN 55102
Dear Commissioner Reinhart:
We strongly encourage Ramsey County to take the needed steps to secure the future of
glass recycling in our county. We support Eureka Recycling's proposal that would
require a zero-interest loan of $500,000 from Ramsey County's Recycling Markets
Support Fund to purchase equipment that will ensure glass is recycled.
Together, our communities represent 71 % of the total population in Ramsey County. The
cities of Saint Paul, Roseville, Maplewood and Lauderdale are committed to ensuring that
all of the glass collected for recycling in our communities is actually recycled. By state
definition this means that glass is collected and processed in a way that will not prevent it
from being collected for recycling into glass bottles again and again. Our municipal
recycling programs were created to benefit the environment and our residents faithfully
put materials at the curb, expecting them to be recycled. Combined, these communities
currently recycle a total of over 4,800 tons of glass annually: Saint Paul residents recycle
over 3,800 tons, Maplewood residents recycle 430 tons, Roseville residents recycle 485
tons and Lauderdale residents recycle 44 tons of glass each year. This accounts for over
16% of our combined recycling streams and nearly 65% of all the glass collected in
Ramsey County.
As you may know, the current situation for green glass has deteriorated to the point that
as of May 1,2006, Anchor Glass in Shakae:e is no longer accepting any green glass or
three-colored mixed glass. Anchor Glass has been the only market for recycling glass
bottles in our area for over the past two decades. Eureka Recycling is now the largest
supplier of recycled glass bottles to Anchor Glass, whereas before the onset of single
