City Council Regular Meeting — 06/2Q/OG
DRAFT Minutes - Page 17
It was Council consensus that discussion of the existin policies,
along with staff recommendations, be included at the next
available City Council Study Session.
12. Consider Glass Recycling
City Manager Beets brought to the Council's attention the lack of
adequate recycling marle demand for green and tri-colored
glass; and reviewed options available with the current contractor,
Eureka Recycling. Mr. Beets noted that the City was
participating with Eureka for a revenue-share for the sale of
materials, with the City's monthly revenue share averaging
approximately $7,300; thus making the recommended option not
an additional cost to City taxpayers.
Options available included:
1) Have Eureka continue to collect green glass, but the City
pays for its disposal at the Newport RDF plant or other
mutually-agreeable alternative site;
2) Have Eureka discontinue collecting green glass. Eureka
would then communicate to residents about why it would
no longer collect green glass. The City and Eureka would
renegotiate the per household fee paid for recycling
collection; or
3) Agree to allow Eureka to ship the glass to Rguse
Manufacturing in Wheaton, MN for use as a sand blasting
medium.
Staff recommended Option No. 3.
Discussion included choices of other communities served by
Eureka; and future projections for the recycled glass market.
Pust moved, Ihlan seconded, approval to allow Eureka to ship the
glass to Raguse Manufacturing in Wheaton, MN for use as a
sand blasting medium.
Roll Call
Ayes: Kough; Ihlan; Pust; Maschka and Klausing.
Nays: None.
Public Comment
John Kysylyczyn, 3083 N Victoria N
Mr. Kysylyczyn disputed the information brought forward by
Recycling
Green /
Tri-colored Glass
Eureka and
Ramsey County
Negotiations
