Unless they are recycled, these cartons end up in landfills and incirera.rors
Burning these containers not l- wastes high quality, recyclable paper, it
releases dioxin from the bleached paper into the air.
Definitions
Aseptic
The word "aseptic" refers to the nethod by which the product is
prepared for packaging. An aseptic process involves filling sterilized
packages with sterilized products, all within a strictly hygienic
environment. Extremely high temperatures are used, allowing for
short ine periods of 3-15 seconds to conpletc the heating and
cooling process of steriizator. These conditions allow for faster
production tin.c:s and better detainment of nutrients that are often
lost in other packaging processes.
"Gable" Top Cartons
These cartoas are made froni a layer of cardboard (called paperboard)
sandwiched iecree» t:r layas of veay thin plastic. Although the contents
of these cartons are pasteurized before packaging, the cartons still need to
be refrigerated.
Aseptic Bricks
Aseptic bricks (UHT or long-life packs), are iade fiirt five layers: three of
plastic, one offoil and one of cardboard. The products in rl cartons are
sterilized before being uackared and, because the cartons fullv seal the
contnts, they do not need to be refrigerated before opening.
Tetra Pak
Tetra Pak is a company. It's one of the world's leading suppliers offood
processing and packaging systems. It was founded in Sweden in 1952 and
has g-otvn to orate in over 16S markets. They produce several types of
aseptic packaging ranging fron i brick shaped juice box cartons to gable top
znillc cartons. Eureka Recycling has been working with Tetra Pak, a
manufacturer of paper-based container packaging, and the Minnesota
Pollution Control Agency to deve:lo.> a recycling system to capture these
materials through its curbside z°ec}rcliz; program.
r`
7'`;:. .
,
 ,
  4 r S
k .Yj 1

. {' ; '- }'`
;r' ".:•; •• I r r"
 r •!.,'A:..Fjl
. .,•.
 ;f:= ,.
f:f.:l,i...,
M .
; ,: _ 1
k .
  '*,=wa+
 ' -T'''
.3 +,*

"Gable" Top Carton
 m
_ ' `z, s ►y+m.n+ {1
  I',;o
: ,;,rw,f
ICr •• ",,,,,'y4,.,'
E
Aseptic Brick Carton
