This project is
included in the 2007 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The projects include the
replacement of the arena refrigeration floor piping, dasher boards and glass, evaporator
condenser; and re-insulating the chiller barrel. To maximize the use of this equipment, these
projects have been delayed for several years based upon a close evaluation each season.
Following is the age of the existing equipment as well as the life expectancy of each:
Item Year Installed Expected Life
Refrigeration Floor 1979 20 years
Boards and Glass System 1982 20 years
Condenser 1998 (used) 5-10 years from install
Chiller - Receiver 1979 15-20 years
At the September L'}', 2006 meeting the City Council suggested staff study the geotherrYal
technology further as it applies to ice arenas. Preliminary indications were that it was not
practical to do in our refurbish situation. Staff has since visited t-wo new geatYennal ice rinks,
gathered .ut.ez information and has been in communication with Hardy MechaYical, a
company that specializes in geothermal technology. All rinks using this technology are newly
constructed and have a higher initial installation cost. There are currently no retrofit nnks in
operation at this time.
As a result of further geothermal technology research, the conventional replacement method
has been temporarily placed on hold and the Stevens Engineering con'act has not been
engaged. Due to various factors, incuding ice time scheduling and favorable bidding time
frame, a drectia decision will need to be made soon for the 2007 project. At this time
sufficient reliable information is not yet available to mal{e a fully inaed recommendation
andlor decision.
