Although the Bill of Rights did not cover discrimination, <br />it however authorized the States to makes such laws, thus the <br />Minnesota Human Rights Act. <br />By forcing the black tenants out of their housing because of their <br />race, the landlord had broken the Human Rights Act law that said "No <br />one should be discriminated against based on his race." The landlord <br />however paid a heavy cost for his action when he was demanded to <br />award the couple at least $525,000. <br />This written experience of discrimination was very meaningful to <br />me. My parents while students at the University of Minnesota, lived <br />with me and my two siblings at various rental housing. It would have <br />been very disrespectful and inhumane for us if we were turned out of <br />our apartments simply because of our race. 1 now wonder what actions <br />my parents would have taken if they were discriminated against in <br />that way. <br />Now that I have read of this family's discrimination and learnt of <br />the laws that protect them, I am left with the question of what action 1 <br />can take to help protect myself and others from discrimination. Three <br />things come to mind. Firstly, I will read more about Human Rights and <br />try to understand the history of what discrimination was like in the <br />past that led to these laws to be created.
