Date: OS/09/OS <br />Item: 3 . e <br />Asian Pacific American Heritage <br />Proclamation <br />Roseville Proclamation <br />Asian Pacific American Heritage Month <br />May 2005 <br />Whereas: In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first <br />week of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and in 1992 the holiday was expanded to the <br />entire month of May; and <br />Whereas: '�l�e month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United <br />States ai� May 7, 1843, and the transcontinentalrailroad con�pletion on May 10, 1869 (Golden <br />Spike Day); and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community festivals, <br />activities and educational opportunities for students; and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans have a long history of contributions to the arts, sciences <br />and humanities; and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans bring a rich cultural heritage representing many <br />languages, eth�iciiies and religious traditions to our society; and <br />Whereas: Approximately five percent of Roseville residents are of Asian Pacific American _ <br />descent; and �- <br />Whereas: Diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and we must strive to ensure -- <br />that all Americans have the opportunity to reach their full potential. By recognizing the =_ <br />accomplishments and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans, Roseville celebrates the ��- <br />importance of inclusion in building a brighter future for all our citizens. �_ <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare May 2005 to be Asian <br />Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, Cou�ty of Ramsey, State of <br />Minnesota, U.S.A <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />to be affixed this 9th day of May 2005. <br />Mayor Craig D.
