Outdoor rinks are a winter playground and <br />learning place for families', friends and local broomball, boot hockey and ice hockey teams. <br />This was a typical outdoor rink seasons in many ways, strong winter traditions combined <br />with operational challenges in establishing rinks due to weather conditions and financial <br />challenges due to budget reductions. The outdoor rink season has traditionally run <br />December 20 through February 20. Budget changes limited the outdoor rink season to a <br />fairly strong holiday schedule, opening most rinks every other day and all the rinks opened <br />on Holiday. The chief operational change came in January when only one rink was open <br />each day Monday—Thursday, and three rinks open on the weekends. The weekly rink <br />schedule rotated between six parks. Neighborhoods voiced frustration over lack of <br />consistent hours at local rinks. Residents cannot skate daily and use the shelter <br />contributing to the inability to develop an active park for skaters and families. Budget <br />changes also resulted in the neighborhood rinks closing in late January, rather than the <br />third week in February as in previous years. <br />Reduced operating dollars required rink managers to explore which days and times are <br />most likely to be used by the community. Annual facility usage surveys tell us that users <br />would like to see more scheduled rink times in the evening rather than the after school and <br />early evening times. It is also the opinion of rink staff and rink users that neighborhood <br />rink management dollars would be better spent and attendance increased if fewer park rink <br />facilities were open and the rinks and shelters were open longer hours with more <br />frequency. Recreation staff will continue to explore the ideas presented and adjust the rink <br />scheduled before next seasons if it is decided that a change is needed. <br />The outdoor rinl� usage remains fairly consistent over the past couple of seasons. Acorn, <br />Villa and Lexington Park are the most highly used rinks. Sandcastle and Evergreen <br />recorded the lowest participation numbers. <br />42 <br />
