The InternationalPropertyMctintesance Code provisionsprovidemany benefits, among which is the model code development
process that offers an international forum for code off'iciais and other intere sted parties to discuss performanceand prescriptive code
requirements. This forum provides an cxcetlent arena to debate proposed revisions. This model code also encouragesinternational
consistency in the application of provisions.
Development
The first edition of the International Property Maintenance Code (1998) was the culmination of an effort initiated in 1996 by a de-
velopment committee appointed by ICC and consisting of the representatives of the three statutory members of the International
CodeCouncil:BuildingOfficialsandCodeAdministratorsInternational,Ina (BOCA),InternationalConierenceofBuildingOffi-
cials (ICBO) and Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI). The committee drafted a coniprehensive set of regula-
tions for existing buildings that was consistent with the existing model properiy maintenance codes at the time. This 2003 edition
presents the code as originally issued, with changes approved through the {'' Code DevelopmentProcess thro ugh 2002. A new edi-
tion such as this is promulgated every three years.
With the developmentand publicationofthe family oflraternalional Codes in 2000, the continued developmentand maintenance
of the model codes individuallypromulgated by BOCA ("BOCANationalCodes"), ICBO ('Uniform Codes") and SBCCI ("Stan-
dard Codes") was discontinued. This 2003International ProperryMaintenane Code, as well as its predecessor—the 2D4Q edition,
is intended to be the successor property maintenancecode to those codes previously developed hy BOCA, ICBO and SBCCI.
