l',
Jy
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Department Approval
;- o
Date: 10/12/09
Item No.: 12.d
City Manager Approval
 /
Item Description:
Authorize the Fire Department to Advertise for Sids for a Fire Rescue/Pumper
Apparatus and Accompanying Equipment
BACKGROUND
The Fire Department continually evaluates the Fire Apparatus Fleet and the need to replace
apparatus as they age and require increased costs of maintenance. The Fire Department
currently has a 22 year old Fire Engine that has been scheduled for replacement approximately 2
years ago. This apparatus has exceeded its life expectancy, and is now in need of replacement.
The current apparatus is in need of significant maintenance to remain an in-service vehicle for
the Fire Department, including many updates to remain in compliance with National Fire
Protection Agency Safety and Use Standards. Due to the age of this apparatus, the safety of
occupants riding in the apparatus is significantly decreased when compared to more modern Fire
Apparatus.
The Fire Department therefore seeks permission from City Council to advertise for bids for a
replacement Fire Rescue/Pumper Apparatus. The anticipated cost for this apparatus and
equipment is between $450,000 and $500,000.
FINANCIAL IMPACTS
Money for the replacement of this apparatus is currently in the Fire Department Vehicle
Replacement fund requiring no additional allocation of funds.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends council authorize the Fire Department to advertise for bid for a new
Rescue/Pumper apparatus and accompanying equipment.
REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION
Authorize the Fire Department to seek bids for the purchase of a new Fire Rescue/Pumper
apparatus and accompanying equipment for said apparatus.
Prepared by: Timothy O'Neill, Acting Fire Chief
Page 1 of 1
