Department Approval <br />i�" ._ <br />� <br />l�'�, <br />Jy <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Date: October 19, 2009 <br />Item No.: 7.d <br />City Manager Approval <br />� � <br />Item Description: <br />Resolution Authorizing the Police Department to participate with Ramsey County Sheriff's <br />Office to receive a Minnesota Department of Public Safety 2009-2010 Safe & Sober Grant <br />BACKGROUND <br />The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office submitted an application to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to <br />receive funds for the 2009-2010 Safe & Sober project. As part of a larger grant to the Ramsey County Sheriff's <br />Office, the Roseville Police Department is eligible to receive up to $52,170 in reimbursement for participation in <br />the Safe & Sober project beginning October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010 to offset increased personnel <br />overtime cost for traffic enforcement. <br />The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office and the Roseville Police Department will enter into a grant agreement with <br />the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Study for the Safe & Sober project during the <br />above stated period. <br />Roseville's Sergeant Rick Wahtera will be coordinating the grant activities for Roseville. Sgt. Wahtera has <br />extensive experience with coordinating efforts for Safe & Sober, Operation Nite Cap, scheduling traffic control <br />details through the State Patrol, commercial vehicle inspections, and is also the Department's representative for <br />AVCAM (a state-wide auto theft prevention organization). <br />The funds awarded to the Roseville Police Department will cover officer overtime. <br />POLICY OBJECTIVE <br />Upon approval from the Council to accept the City's portion of the grant funds, Sergeant Wahtera will <br />coordinate scheduling and tracking methods to ensure adequate patrol coverage for all waves of the Safe & Sober <br />Campaign. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACTS <br />None. There is no city match requirement for this funding. <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION <br />The police department is recommending that it be allowed to accept the grant funds to effectively participate in <br />the 2009 Safe & Sober campaign by City Council adoption of the Resolution entitled, "Resolution Relating to <br />the Administration and Implementation of a Traffic Safety Grant by the Roseville Police Department." <br />REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION <br />Adopt a Resolution "Relating to the Administration and Implementation of a Traffic Safety Grant by the <br />Page 1 of 5 <br />
