Request for Council Action
Date: January 5,2004
Item Number: 4. I.
Department Approval Manager Approval Agenda Section
` , r1ip+l Business
Item Description:
City Council Goal-Setting andlor Team-Building
Back_round:
In the past, the Council has tal{en different paths regarding City Council goal-setting and/or
team-building. Sometimes, the Council has done nothing in either regard. Sometimes the
Councilhas hired an outside consultant to lead a goal-setting, team-buildingprogram.
From my perspective, it helps staff to know what the Council's overarching goals and
objectives are. It helps us in drafting a budget. It helps us in assigning resources to projects.
Alternatives:
1. Conduct no goal-setting or team-building.
2. Hire a consultant to lead the Council through goal-setting, team-building, or both.
3. Have staff lead the Council through goal-setting, team-building, or both.
Fiscal Impact:
These activities tal{e Council and staff time. In addition, an outside consultant would cost
somewhere between $2,000 and $10,000 depending on the scope of the consultant's activities.
Council Action Recuested:
City Council discussion and direction about City Council goal-setting and team-building.
