City of Roseville Reservoir Woods
2003 Metro Greenways Site Restoration Grant
REUISED Work Plan
Task 1— Nonnative Brush Control
Deliverable: Minimum of 16 acres of invasive/nonnative brush control
December 2003 — Apri12005
Voltinteers, City Parks crews and Bonestroo Ecologists will work together to control
nonnative/invasive brush in up to 57 acres of nariiral areas, including the oak forest parcels,
dry prairie, and coniferous-hardwood forest areas of the project site. We propose to
accomplish complete nonnative shrub control (stems over %z' in diameter) in a minimum of
10 acres of oak forest areas, a mientim of 6 acres of invasive bxushlsmall tree control in the
prairie. It is anticipated that removal of nonnative shrubs will also continue with assistance
from volunteers in aak/prairie areas and up to 15 acres of the mixed conifer-hardwood forest
up to and beyond June 2005.
The highest priority for control will be the oak and prairie communities so that a prescribed
bum can be conducted after this work. Control of most woody species is anticipated to be
complete by April spring 2004. Invasive slarub clearing in other areas will continue as crews
can be scheduled in 2004 and early 2005. In 2004, some shrub control may occur in the
prairie areas during the mid- to late summer months when treatments for species such as
sumac are generally more effective.
Task 2— Prescribed Fire in Oak and,Prairiecommunities
Deliverable: Prescribed re in approximately 20 acres of oak forest & prairie _
April/May 2004 or 2005
Prescribed fire will be applied to approximately 20 acres of the project area including the
prairie and the north segment of oak forest to suppress invasive brush, stimulate native
graminoids and forbs and foster recruitment of oak seedlings. This work is anticipated to be
accomplished in the spring of 2004 or 2005, depending on site conditions and weather
conditions in a particular burn season. This work will be accomplished under direct
supervision of the Roseville Fire Department and Roseville Park and Recreation Department.
If the cost for this activity is lower than the estimate provided, we propose to redirect funds
toward the purchase of additional local ecotype native seedllive plants for installation in the
prairie and oak forest.
Task 3 — Species Enrichment
Deliverable: Species enrichment of 25 acres of oak forest and prairie
May 2004, Fall/Winter 2004-2005
The prairie and segments of the oak forest area have experienced a reduction in species
