Date: 02/09/04 <br />Item: 5.2 <br />Recognitions <br />� � Black History Month <br />Rosev�lle Proclamat�on <br />Black History Month <br />February 2004 <br />Whereas: the City of Roseville is committed to recognizing and honoring the <br />contributions of all members of our community; and <br />Whereas: Negro History Weelc was established in 1926 by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson <br />as a way to neutralize the deliberate distortion of Blacic History; and <br />Whereas: this movement grew over the years to Blacic History Month to give an <br />obj ective and scholarly balance in American and World History; and <br />Whereas: the month of February was selected as Blacic History Month because it marlcs <br />the birth of Fredericic Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes and Abraham Lincoln, <br />leaders whose actions greatly impacted the lives of the American blacic population; and <br />Whereas: the month of February marlcs the birth of the NAACP and the first Pan African <br />Congress; and <br />Whereas: African American's history, music, arts, written words and discoveries are <br />often overloolced; and <br />Whereas: the City declares prejudice and ignorance has no place in our community; and <br />Whereas: the Roseville Human Rights Commission invites all members of the Roseville <br />community to renew their commitment to ensuring racial equality, understanding and justice. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare February 2004 to be <br />Blacic History Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, U.S.A <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of <br />Roseville to be affixed this 9th day of February 2004. <br />Mayor Craig D.
