—
: <:F
Department Approval
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Manager Reviewed:
_ '
DATE: 4119104
ITEM NO: 12.
Agenda Section:
ltem Description: Naming of Park Land at Applewood Pointe Development
BACKGROUND
As you are aware the Applewood Pointe Development is currently well underway and is
anticipated finishing up later in the summer/fall of 2004. In the development there will be
two segments of a neighborhood park. On the north side of the development there will
be approximately two acres of open and play space and on the south side of the
development there will be approximately two acres consisting of a pond and overlook.
The Parks and Recreation Commission has studied the naming of this property as per
the City policy (copy attached). The Commission used the following process:
1. Review of City policy for naming of parks.
2. Solicitation of suggestions from neighborhood.
3. Discussion of the History of the Property.
4. Discussion of options for names.
Following several months of discussion, The Parks and Recreation Commission has
recommended a name for the new park area on the north side of the development to be
Applewood Park and the area on the south side of the development to be Applewood
Overlook. The Commission stated that their reasons for recommending this name was
based upon the neighborhood suggestions, the future name recognitionlassociation to
the site as well as the full contribution/dedcation of the park to the community by the
development. They felt that the name was particularly significant with future direction
giving.
POLICY OBJECTIVE
The established City policy is to refer to the Parks and Recreation Commission for
recommendation on the naming of City Parks and Recreation land and facilities. A copy
of the policy is attached.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
None
r+
