—t
TWIN LAKES PARKWAY-PRIOR/MOUNT RIDGE AVENUES
PROPOSEDROUNDABOUT
The City of Maplewood's experience with roundabouts has been positive:
. Since opening of the first roundabout at Frost Avenue and English Street in 2002,
a second one has been constructed and a third is in the planning stages
 A reduction in crashes has been experienced at the Frost Avenue and English
Street intersection from 4-6 per year prior to the roundabout to only one in past
two years
 The police and fire departments have been supportive, since delays are reduced
• A speed reduction of 2-S miles per hour has been observed
In general roundabouts:
 have slower speeds (15 MPH required for roundabout), which are consistent with
planned roadways through Twin Lakes area;
 result in fewer "conflict points" (places where crashes are most likely);
 have winter maintenance that is no more involved than for a regular intersection;
 operate more efficiently than all-way stop-controlledintersection;
 Can have lower overall construction/mainCenance costs than signalized
intersections;
• Require adjustment on the part of driver behavior.
#

 i

 w
n ,.
on
o  w

on
The proposed Twin Lakes Parkway -Prior/Mount Ridge roundabout:
 Has an appropriate design for the expected volumes and traffic mix;
 would operate at about 63 percent of capacity in a typical weekday p.m. peak
hour;
• would operate at approximately 80 percent of capacity in a typical weekend peak
hour;
 may exceed capacity by 10-15 percent during a holiday season weekend peak
hour (depending on retail mix).
October 12, 2004
