REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
ItemDescription:
BACKGROUND
ManaApproval:
Date: 4110100
Item No.: F - 3
AgendaSection:
Acceptance of the Minnesota Auto Theft
Prevention Program Grant
Reports and Recommendatiofs
In a City such as ours with such a major retail component, the problem of auto theft and theft
from auto has a significant impact on both our economy and quality of life.
This is the third Minnesota Auto Theft Prevention Program Grant the Roseville Police
Department has applied for and been awarded. The police department uses the grant monies
for overtime for officers to perform increased surveillance of identified problem sites.
With monies from this grant (fiscal year 2001) the department will continue to supplement
officer overtime, and also use $3,000 of the $12,500 awarded funds to acquire a portable kiosk.
The kiosk will always be staffed with a representative from the Roseville Police Department who
will be available to answer questions and distribute informative materials.
The department plans to set up the kiosk at various shopping malls, retail centers, the DMV,
National Night Out festivities, the high school, and other city functions and locations as time
allows.
Statistics demonstrate that increased surveillance through the use of officer overtime and
community awareness has decreased auto theft in our community. In 1999, auto theft
decreased over 30% from 1998 in the City of Roseville.
FINANCIAL OBLIGATION
The grant will allow for added overtime for officers doing surveillance work to prevent auto theft.
There is no local matching fund requirement.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Authorize acceptance of the $12,500 Minnesota Auto Theft Prevention Program Grant.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
Approve the resolution authorizing the City Manager to accept the $12,500 grant award.
