Department Approval <br />Item Description: <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Manager Rev���.ved: <br />���� <br />DATE: 6/12/00 <br />ITEM NO: C-4 <br />Agenda Section: Consent <br />Acceptance Minnesota ReLeaf - Community Planting <br />"Street Tree Reforestation" Grant from DNR <br />BACKGROUND <br />The Parks and Recreation Department has received a grant for funding assistance from <br />Minnesota ReLeaf Community Planting Program in the amount of $6,565. The proposal is <br />to re-plant 50 street trees on properties that have lost boulevard trees in the last few years <br />due to disease or storm damage. As part of this proposal, the City must agree to maintain <br />the trees on a regular scheduled program for three year, as well as, remain committed to <br />our on-going street tree maintenance program. <br />POLICY OBJECTIVE <br />This proposal is consistent with the City's Street Tree Master Plan. <br />FINANCIAL IMPLICATION <br />The City has budgeted $2,000 in the Reforestation program of PIP, with an additional <br />$2,000 coming from the Round-up Program for this project. In addition, the City will <br />provide $5,000 of in-kind service in the form of planning, coordination, inspection and a <br />three-year maintenance program. <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION <br />Staff recommends the acceptance of funding assistance to aid in the reforestation of street <br />trees in areas of the community that have suffered boulevard tree loss, as outlined in the <br />Street Tree Master Plan. In addition, we recommend a commitment to a three year <br />maintenance program to provide the needed care for proper plant establishment. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Motion authorizing the acceptance of a grant from the Minnesota ReLeaf Community <br />Planting Program for $6,565 with matching resources of $2,000 cash from the <br />Reforestation program of PIP, and $2,000 cash from the Round-up Program. The City will <br />also contribute $5,000 of in-kind service in the form of planning, coordination, inspection <br />and a three-year maintenance program. <br />
