REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DATE: 7/10/00
ITEM NO: _2
Department Approval: Manager Reviewed: Agenda Section:
\`-." Recognitions
Item Description: Recognition of Volunteers and Staff for Hosting 2000 Star of the
North Summer Games
BACKGROUND
Recently, the City of Roseville successfully hosted the 2000 Star of the North Games.
The games attracted over 8500 participants and another estimated 5500 visitors to
Roseville. This is an increase of over 1,000 participants as compared to the 1995
Summer Games in Roseville. The games were entirely self-sufficient returning excess
funds to support ongoing parks and recreation programs.
As a result of hosting the Games Roseville:
. Experienced significant economic gain.
. Showcased our community as a great place to live, work, recreate and
shop.
. Provided a unique accessible recreational sports experience for our
citizens.
Developed close relationships between many segments of our community
through the challenge of hosting the Games.
The 2000 Star of the North Summer Games could not have been successfully hosted
without the dedicated efforts of over 500 volunteers and staff. Key members of the
volunteer and staff leadership will be at the July 10' Council meeting for a review of the
games and recognition of their efforts.
One critical support group was the Roseville Visitors' Association, which financially
supported the Games as well as their staff assisting in providing hospitality for the events.
POLICY OBJECTIVE
The City of Roseville encourages citizens and organizations to participate in programs
of the City of Roseville thereby expanding the ability of the City to provide such
programs and services without financially impacting citizens.
