REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION rtment Approval: Description: D A T E: 07/24/00 ITEM N0: I — 2 Approved: Agenda Section: � 11 LAND USE Request for Authorization to Prepare Plans and Specifications To Demolish Arona Site Building 1.0 BACKGROUND 1.1 With the relocation of the Parks and Recreation offices to the Fair-view Community Center this fall, the City is now in the position of proceeding with the preliminary phase of site usage, which entails the preparation of plans and specifications for demolition of the building. 12 As indicated earlier (July 17"' discussion), it is estimated that the building will cost $100,000 -$150,000 to demolish, in part because of the required asbestos removal. The demolition of the building could be done in the fall of 2000 with housing fund dollars that would be recaptured as part of the agreement with the eventual developer. This, again, would expedite development and reduce the front end costs for some of the smaller developers. 1.3 2.0 Upon Council's approval to proceed with preparation of plans and specifications and bidding for demolition of the building site, the staff estimates the following schedule: August 2000 Request for bids for the demolition September 25 Council reviews/approves best bid October 30 Demolition complete SUGGESTED CITY COUNCIL ACTION By motion, approve preparation of plans and specifications for the demolition of the current city owned 30,000 square foot building at 2800 Arona Street, and further, approve the advertisement for bids for this building demolition.
