MEMO
T0:
FROM
DATE:
RE:
City Council
Steve Sarkozy
October 18, 2000
.
Roseville Parks and Recreation
Recipient of National Gold Medal Award
Item: G-I
The Roseville Parks and Recreation Department is a winner of the 2000 National
Gold Medal Award, one of the most prestigious and coveted national awards for parks and
recreation programs. Sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)
in cooperation with the National Sporting Goods Association's Sports Foundation, the Gold
Medal Award has been presented annually since 1965 to communities throughout the
United States in recognition of excellence in park and recreation administration.
To be considered for the award, parks and recreation programs must be nominated
by a member of the National Sporting Goods Association and complete a comprehensive
nomination form. The award program receives thousands of nominations, which are
narrowed down to four finalists in each of five classes based on populations served.
Winners are selected by a panel of judges based on their success in showing how their
program continually improves services, emphasizes planning and development, participates
with community groups, and how well programs are accepted and used within the
community served. As part of the award process, Roseville's Parks and Recreation
Department stressed its partnerships with community groups, its unique facilities such as
the John Rose Minnesota OVAL and Aggressive Skate Park, and its planning and
evaluation process that identified the need for more programs for seniors, at-risk youth and
special populations.
Roseville was nominated for the award by Strauss Skates and was notified in June
that it was among four finalists in Class IV (populations of 20,000 to 50,000). The other
finalists included the Blue Springs Missouri Parks and Recreation Department, the James
City County Division of Parks and Recreation in Williamsburg, VA, and the City of
Lafayette Colorado Parks and Recreation Department.
In the past few years, the Roseville Parks and Recreation Department has been
nominated for the award 10 times and was named a finalist in 1966. This is the first time it
has won. Winners were announced at the National Recreation and Park Association annual
congress in Phoenix, AZ on October 11.
Respectfully submitted.
