f
The Im ortance of Human Ri hts
"Hey are you Chinese?"
"Asian people are smart!"
"All the people with black hair go over here."
Margaret Lee
$th Grade
Roseville Area Middle School
Mr. Jeff Bibeau
2rd Place
"What do you mear yau cfon't believe Jesus died for our sins?"
Those are only a fev of [he stereatypical and discriminatory things that I have heard. These
ihings tend to violate peop[e's human rigEts and they are usually offersive. Huma« rights are rights you
are barn vith and they can never be taken away. The three human righis that mean ihe most to me are
articles t«o, 15, and 19 of tle lJniversal Declaration of Human Rights. They incitide, Freedarr from
discriminatian, Riht t.o a NaEionality and the Freedor to Change it, and Freedorn of Belief and Reiigion.
Those human rights are the most important to me because they fii in the va9ues system my family instilled
in me.
Article Two of the Universal Declaration of Humar Rights is the 'reedom from Discrirrtination.
This is very meaningful to me because almost a[1 my life, i have bee« the ethnic minority; at school,
sports and such activiiies. I vras born in Korea but 1 moved to the United States when Ias four years old.
When I was fittle I didn't knov anything about discrimina€ion or race and definitely not hate crimes.
Many people take discriminatia differentl}r. Societa] minorities are usually the victims of discrimination,
sa they take it more seriously and are more aare of the hurt ihat it causes, Yet, peo€e interpret
discrimination differently and that is something people should respect. A familial enconter vith racial
discrimination is at ny dad's previous job. He worked at a warehouse and there was the warehouse area
that was cement and then there was an office area with carpeted floor. The arehouse workers caled te
office workers "carpet people" and tfere .arere no people of color amog the "carpet peope" and o
Caucasian peaple arrtong the warehouse warkers. A fev times, my dad applied to vork vith the "carpet
