POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC
HYDROCARBONS (PAHS~
IN WET POND SEDIMENTS
Contributed by Scott Kyser
(Contact: John Gulliver at gu11i003@umn.edu or
Ray Hozalski at hozal00l @umn.edu)
Funded by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
High levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
have been found in many Stormwater pond sediments in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. Under MPCA regulations
dredged sediments containing high levels of PAHs must be
disposed of in a landfill which is prohibitively expensive for
many municipalities. The potential to remediate PAH con-
taining sediments through composting techniques is being
investigated first using aproof-of-concept benchtop experi-
ment and later an outdoor field size experiment. The goal of
the project is to design a composting procedure that effec-
tively remediates PAH containing sediments to lower levels
so that they can be disposed of more cost-effectively.
EVENTS
November 5th: (Arden Hills, MN).
