Item 4. b
New American Dialogue
•
Date: February 18, 2010
To: Roseville Human Rights Commission
Fr: Roseville Police Department
Roseville Fire Department
Re: Community Forum for New Americans
In the past several months and years, we have encountered difficult situations with people
who are new to our community or to our country. These situations caused some
unnecessary worries and in some circumstances, hindered our ability to provide the help
that was needed.
Recently Police Community Relations Coordinator Sarah Mahmud and Communications
Specialist Carolyn Curti attended an Immigrant Community Roundtable that discussed
building relationships between law enforcement and multicultural communities.
Representatives from Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Hopkins and Richfield talked
about their Joint Community Policing Partnership efforts to improve the safety and
livability for all. Among several ideas was to host a community forum for new
Americans.
Sarah also attended a community talk for Bhutanese refugees living in Falcon Heights
and the surrounding area (including Roseville). She and a St. Anthony Police officer
presented information and responded to questions. Sarah reported it was extremely
helpful for this community of new Americans. We hope to host a similar event here in
Roseville, and we want to partner with the Human Rights Commission and the Roseville
Schools to make this possible.
In particular we would need financial support from the Human Rights Commission for
food, transportation and interpreter services.
We are also hoping to work with the Roseville Schools to co-sponsor the forum and
reach the new American community.
Please consider partnering with us to coordinate a community forum for new. Americans.
We would be glad to meet with you at your next meeting to discuss in greater detail.
