Three counties--Aitkin,
eltrami, and Faribault--each have highly successful,
but very different, water planning programs.
ome of the things Faribault
County has accomplished
through its water plan are
easy to see--dumps are being
cleaned up, abandoned wells
sealed, lakes and rivers monitored.
But some things aren't as easy to
spot.
"It's given us credibility, both in the
eyes of our county commissioners
and in the eyes of the public,' said
Gary Wehrenberg, manager of the
Faribault Soil and Water Conserva-
tion District (SWCD), which. is the
local coordinator for the water plan.
Before the Comprehensive Local
Water Planning Program, the
district rarely had contact with the
Faribault County Board of Commis-
sioners, Wehrenberg said. Now, the
county often calls on the SWCD for
help with its feedlot and septic
system permitting. 'rhe county also
delegated administration of the
Wetland Conservation Act (WCA) to
the SWCD.
Faribault con't p. 2
