Tour con't
miles of drainage ditches the
district manages, a potential
wetlands banking area, and
numerous flood control
projects. The group also
visited the site of the proposed
Mazsh Creek Detention Area,
Site #6, in Mahnomen County,
where the districts hopes to
soon construct a new flood
control project.
The guests also saw portions
of the levee rehabilitation
project along the Wild Rice
River near Ada, including
examples of erosion protection
measures, dike repairs, and
ring diking to protect local
farmsteads.
The wide variety of activities
the districts in the Red River
Basin participate in surprised
many tour participants. "Many
districts' primary activity is in
the area of water quality
issues, and many visiting
managers didn't realize the
different issues we face with
flooding and drainage due to
the typography of the water-
shed districts," said Jerry
Bennett, administrator of the
Wild Rice Watershed District.
"I think a lot of our guests left
with a better understanding of
what rural watershed districts
in the Red River basin and
upland areas deal with."
MAWD represents
Minnesota Board of Water and
Soil Resources
One West Water St.
Suite 200
St. Paul, MiV 55107
STEVE C;ATLIN/C.
