Summer/Fall 1995 WATER TALK Page 11
Through historical records, a lakes' range of fluctuation can be seen. During low
water years, lakeshore owners may forget how high the water levels can get,
especially when so many years pass between high water years as shown on the
North Center graph. The range from high to low on the landlocked North Center
Lake is nearly seven feet. Compared to about three feet of fluctuation on Rush
Lake, lakeshore owners on the Chisago Chain will be moving their docks mare
often.
Equol opportunity fo participate h and benefit from
programs of the Minnesota Department of Naturd
Resources 1s available fo aM ln<fviduals regardess of race.
cdor, natbnd origin, sex, sexual orientation, maritd
status, status with regard to public osslstmce, age a
dlsoblNty. The
Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) has published a
new map with new flood
elevations for the chain of lakes.
Many residences have benefited
because lenders are no longer
requiring many to maintain
flood insurance policies since
100-year flood elevations
dropped nearly two feet.
Our DNR Division of Waters
is fortunate to have hundreds of
volunteer gage readers taking
water level readings on over 600
gages throughout the state. The
Division of Waters staff surveys
gages each spring to calibrate
them witl"c sea level datum. The
information collected helps
provide real time data for a
variety of lake issues. The
readings are kept in a computer
database which, over the long
term, can show trends for water
levels. The Chisago Chain has
an excellent history of lake level
readings which helps build
these graphs.
The DNR Mformation Center phone numbers:
Twin Gtties: (612) 296-6157
MN Totl Free: 1-800-766-6000
Telecommunication Device for the Deaf:
(612) 296-5484
MN Toll Free: 1-800-657-3929
Printed on Recycled Paper
Contalru 1596 postconsumer waste
