Henderson and Dindorf are collaborat-
ing on a oew book, tentatively titled
Landscaping for Wildlife, that will explain
in detail how do natural shoreline land-
scaping. Henderson, author of the popular
Landscaping for Wildlife, says the new
book, scheduled for publication is 1997,.
will be the first comprehensive guide to
landscaping along lakeshores as a way
m benefit manual plant and animal com-
munities.
As a general. rule, Henderson recom-
meadc that Lakeshore owners try m create a
aannal buffer zee along the shoreline that
extends 50 feet out inm the ware and 50
feet up the shore. `Try m preserve as mtxh
ttaatral vegetation in the wafer and oo the
shore while still retaining rLBSOnable lake
access and recreational opportunities for
you and your. family:' Ix says. "I.U's say
you have 1W fat of shoreline. Consider
reverting about 75 feet back m its nanaal
condition and keeping 25 feet for a boat
dock and a. swimming area."
Natural landscaping doesn't have to look
messy. Henderson points out that people
who have lake cabins and lake homes can
maintain a tidy Lakeshore while doing good
for the lake environment: Even. some
trimmed. lawn is okay if not too heavily fer-
tilized and. if bordered at the lake end with
native grasses and other plants thaz will
filter polltmmts from nt~ff.
"Ihe key is m figure om what you desire
from your lake site," Henderson says. "If
you want it to look amaciive, provide a
view of the water, protest your sense of
privacy, anti also help fish anti wildlife,
there are ways of accomplishing all that and
more with native plantings:'
Henderson concedes that getting people
to change the way they view their Lakeshore
property won't happen overnight Bm be's
encoutaged~by a growing awareness armng
Minnesotans of the value of native plants
and the importance of the manual shoreline
eaviroomeat
"I think many Lakeshore owners are
looking arotmd aml seeing alabor-intensive
landscaping style based on what they left
behind in the cities and suburbs:' Hender-
son says. "What we're proposing with
wildlife lakesraping is a way for people to
retain more of the natural qualities that
make lake living so attractive in the first
P~ "
~, O Avat7abL: at some specialty nurseries, '
ha[slstrm bah, aaawhead, tutavwleaf wmiL-and bur
® ~ ® tart phttaed m offshore tudg will stabtlvt the shoreline
'ate ptavIde s amoral 1
• Nviee Attl a~ redtne
°:.
A,r •av HOAt$.
