The profiles focus on
hydrogeology and the quantity anal quality of
groundwater in a region, and point out areas
where specific action is needed to improve
our understanding of Minnesota's under-
ground resources. For copies of a profile for
your region, or to request a complete set of
nine for the whole state, contact MPCA at
612-296-7789.
1995 G AP Annual Report
available
MPCA's Groundwater Monitoring and As-
sessment Program {GWMAP) announces
publication of its 1995 annual report on the
status of the state's groundwater quality.
Results of 197 well samples from central
Minnesota collected during the 1994 field
season are presented, along with distribution
maps for several parameters of concern
including nitrate, boron and arsenic. Also
featured is a comparison of water quality in
several of Minnesota's principal aquifers from
1985 versus quality in those same aquifers in
1994. Copies are available from MPCA at
612-296-7789.
Groundwater directory
A new publication, Ground Water: A Direc-
tory of Minnesota Programs and Resources,
is available from the MPCA. This booklet
provides a directory to state agency contacts
for common groundwater issues and ques-
tions, including wells and. drinking water,
groundwater monitoring, and cleanup. Cop-
ies of the directory can be obtained by calling
the MPCA at 612-296-7789.
solid aste anagement Rule
revisions
The MPCA's Groundwater and Solid Waste
Division is preparing a set of selected
amendments to the Solid Waste Manage-
ment Rules, Chapters 7001, 7035 and 7048.
The bulk of these rules were last amended
significantly in 1988. The subjects of the
amendments include changes to financial
assurance requirements at mixed municipal
solid waste (MMSW) landfills; operations
related to MMSW landfills; demolition and
industrial landfills; and waste-hauler and
transfer operations. MPCA has convened
four informal advisory groups on these sub-
jects. While the effort does not involve
fundamental redrafting or restructuring of the
rules, it does cover subjects that generate
enough interest and public comment that the
MPCA is anticipating hearings before an
administrative law judge in the fall of 1996.
The process is expected to be complete by
January 1997.
Working on the amendments are MPCA
staffers Cristine 1_eavitt, Cathy Latham and
Jim Chiles. Jim Chiles (612-296-7273) is
serving as coordinator, and interested parties
may contact him to be put on the mailing list
for discussion papers and drafts as they are
produced.
Petroleur~a tank leak prevention
initiative
Last legislative session the governor signed
9
