"Conservation 2000--Precision <br />Resource Management" <br />proved an apt theme for the <br />59th annual convention of the <br />Minnesota Association of Soii <br />and Water Conservation. <br />Districts (MASWCD) Decem- <br />ber 10, 11 and 12 at the St. <br />C+oud Civic Center. <br />The 800-plus registrants <br />attended training seminars on <br />computers, marketing tech- <br />niques, precision farming, and <br />technical coordination with <br />other agencies--in short, all of <br />the things that conservation- <br />ists need to function in this <br />decade and beyond. <br />In addition to training ses- <br />sions, the convention fea- <br />tured akeynote speech by <br />R. Neil Sampson, senior vice <br />president for science and <br />policy for American Forests, <br />a forestry trade association. <br />Sampson spoke on the <br />history of agriculture anal <br />how agriculture must change <br />in the future. <br />"Only if we achieve sustain- <br />able agriculture will we <br />achieve a sustainable <br />society," he said. `That leads <br />me to believe that the future <br />has got to be different than <br />SWCDs con't on p.3 <br />~~t~~ <br />About 250 watershed district <br />managers, engineers, attor- <br />neys, natural resource profes- <br />sionals and others attended <br />the i 995 meeting of the <br />Minnesota Association of <br />V~latershed Districts (MAWD) <br />December 1 and 2 at the <br />Radisson Arrowwood in <br />Alexandria. <br />The meeting featured keynote <br />speaker Robert Sopuck, the <br />executive director of the <br />Manitoba Sustainable Devel- <br />opment Coordination Unit. <br />Sopuck's speech, called <br />`Getting Rich--Save the <br />Environment," centered on the <br />idea that environmental <br />management improves as <br />countries grow wealthier. <br />Economic growth and sound <br />environmental policy should <br />go hand-in-hand, rather than <br />compete, he said. <br />;bLiW'D con't on p. ~F <br />SWC~s cooks to future MAWD <br />(L to R) Rep.
