BWSR N.E. TEL:218-723-4794 Oct 02 96 13:19 No .002 P.03
.~~,.... .~x....... ._
Stencils for storm drain stenciling should be reusable, flexible, and easy for volunteers to and e.
Typical size ranges from 15' x 26" to 24" x 36". Most stencils are made of 10 mil myiar.
Although some communities have used cardboard, it isn't as durable or easy to use as myiar.
There ar® many sources for myiar stencils hers in Minnesota. The decision on where to qet stencils
will depend on your budget and available local resources. Some county highway departments or
high school shop classes have cut customized stencils for Paint the Town campaigns. Check your
local options first, Some groups have tried cutting stencils by hand from the kind of myiar used for
crafts, but ft !s difficult to cut smoothly, it's hard to find large enough pieces of the myiar, and the
myiar Isn°t very durable.
If you can't find a local option, there are at least three other sources in Minnesota. You may be
able to crow Customized stencils, you can get them at no charge from the MPCA, or you can have
them out at a company in St. Paul. A fourth option is to order stencils from a fim~ in Seattle.
Several eommunlties in Minnesota have already stenciled storm drains and have stencils custom-cut
with th® names of major rivers and lakes. Coordinators from pilot projects across northern
Minnesota Indicated that it was very important to identffy the name of the receiving body of water in
the slogan {e.g. "Drains to Lake Superior") because volunteers and neighborhood residents
relate and understand the direct connection better. Stencils identifying the Mississippi, Red, Red
Lake, and Sauk rivers and Lake Superior have been cut and may be available on loan.
The pilot a[nt the Town protects all used customized stencils from:
The company has copies of the stencil design, which includes a fish, waves, and trees, on file. Th®
design is not copyrighted and you may have it changed to include the name of the receving take or
river for your project, These stencils were either 18" x 27" or 24" x 36". The larger ones were a
bit more difficult for volunteers to manage, but the painted slogan was often clearer. The complex
design, large size, and specific name meant these stencils were costly -- each was about $130.
If your budget is limi#ed or you want many stencils, they are available at no charge from the MPCA:
These are 15' x 26' (with a 9" x 21" image area). These myiar stencils include a fish design and
say either 'Dump No Waste, Drains to Lake' or "Dump No Waste, Drains to River." Although they
do not include the specific name of the receiving water body, they can really give your program a
boost, especially if you have a limited budget. They can be combined with a few stencils that do
identify the lake or river and can be used in areas wher® storm drains have several outlets and
specific names are not appropriate.
A company in Seattle offers low cast stencils purchased in lots of at least 25 {$1p.25 each for 25
down to $2.50 for 5000). These myiar stencils include a fish and a generic message, `Don't Dump,
Drains to ...". The company will custom-cut stencils, but the cost will be higher.
