Painting tips
Successful stenciling depends on using the paint correctly. Aerosol and liquid paints
have different directions -- follow our suggestions carefully!!
When stenciling, if you have trouble with painting and the stencil doesn't look right,
don't try to clean it up and re-do it. You're likely to make it worse. Instead, move on
to another drain and try to avoid whatever went wrong the last time.
Stenciling with Aerosol Paint:
Shake the aerosol can before spraying and between sprays to keep it from clogging.
Hold the aerosol can 6 inches above the stencil and spray the paint in a back
and forth motion across the stencil. Always be careful to spray at
" `~ the stencil and not at anything or anybody else. Also, use paint sparingly
-you don't need a lot to make it legible.
f
Stenciling with Liquid Paint:
Dip the roller or foam brush into the paint can, remove excess paint by rolling or
dabbing it on newspaper, and apply it to the stencil. With liquid paint, it is especially
important to use small amounts on the roller. Too much paint will . ^,,.
seep under the stencil and smear. When you're using liquid pai:.i,
it's also important to practice stenciling ahead of time. It'll
pay off on stenciling day! _
I,
If you spill the paint, use rags to "dam it up" so it doesn't
flow into the drain or into the street. Soak up spilled paint
with newspapers. (Once the newspapers dry, you can dispose of them in the trash.)
Step 6: Congratulate your team, you've
stenciled a drain! Deliver leaflets to
nearby homes, if you haven't done so
already, and move on to your next drain.
When you finish stenciling:
(If you used liquid latex paint, clean the
roller with water first.)
Ask your project. coordinator how to
dispose of any empty paint cans, trash and
recyclables you may have.
Celebrate! You've worked hard. and
Report the number of drains stenciled to helped to protect our environment.
your project coordinator. Return all of the
stenciling equipment, including the paint.
Printed on recycled paper containing at feast Revised 12/93
10°b fibers from paper recycled by consumers
