~'~., ._
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (date) Contact: (contact name/phone)
LOCAL STORM DRAIN STENCILING PROJECT DATES SET
On (insert local project dates here), selected neighborhoods in (insert your community
name here) will notice a new fish on their street! The fish symbol is part of the Storm Drain
Stenciling Project, coordinated by (insert local group name), as part of a statewide effort to
protect local water resources.
In addition to the fish symbol, the stencil includes the message "Dump No Waste, Drains to
Lake/River." The message serves as a reminder that storm drains should never be used to
dispose of household wastes.
Storm drains are commonly misused for the disposal of paint, antifreeze, motor oil, pesti-
cides and other wastes. These wastes can seriously damage our community's water
quality and environment. In many communities, stormwater runoff is discharged directly
into nearby streams, rivers, lakes or even sinkholes, which flow into local groundwater.
The Storm Drain Stenciling Project involves stenciling storm drains, and a community
education campaign. (Insert local group name) is sponsoring this Project locally in an effort
to protect and preserve our area's water quality. Other support is being provided by
(include any person, group or agency associated with your project -they'll appreciate it!).
Many other environmentally concerned groups across the state are coordinating similar
events in their cities and towns. This Project is sponsored, in part, by the Minnesota
Pollution Control Agency.
For more information on how to participate in this project, or how to dispose of household
hazardous wastes, contact (insert local contact name and phone number, plus best times
to call ).
-30-
A cooperative effort to help protect your communfty's waterways.
