Implications of anagement
Classifying wetlands as WIVIO-managed implies that the WMO will be involved in at least some of
the wetland management activities. For example, it may be appropriate for the WMO to assess the
functions and values of the wetlands that fall under the "definitely" and "maybe" categories for
WMO management; the cities would then be responsible for assessing the functions and values of
those wetlands that fall under the "definitely not" category. Another role for the WMO could be to
identify the necessary wetland management activities that would be appropriate for the WMO-
managed wetlands. It may be appropriate for either the city or the WMO to pay for/take on the
activities.
Wetland management can take place in the watershed or the wetland itself. Examples of wetland
management activities include: managing bounce, acquiring/requiring buffers, managing plant and
wildlife diversity, upstream water quality treatment, upstream stormwater diversion, constructing
interpretive areas/trails, restoring/rehabilitating wetland areas, and maintaining/creating
greenways/connections to other natural resources.
wetland_class.doc Page 4 09/29/99
