A snowstorm struck central and southern
Minnesota on March 8th and 9th, dropping heavy snow. The sixteen inches measured at the Twin Cities Interna-
tional Airport tied for 8th place in all-time daily snowfall amounts. The month of April began with wet weather in
the north. Heavy precipitation was unwelcome in northwestern Minnesota, where the combination of snowmelt
runoff and rainfall led to moderate to major flooding on the lower Red River and its tributaries. Wet weather then
moved southward during the second week of April, with many southern Minnesota locations reporting over three
inches of rain for the week (Figure 3). The second half of April fumed quite dry except for extreme southeastern
Minnesota. A combination of sunny skies, strong winds and low relative humidity dramatically increased the
potential for fire. Through May 5th, DNR Forestry reported 1,310 fires for the year.
eadelr~.s.
We will continue to send V'~AT~I~TALK
to you unless you would like us to stop.
If you would like us to take you off
our mailing list, please notify us
in writing or by calling.
